SUBSTANTIVE EDITING

Focus: Organization of Content

A substantive edit requires a look at the overall goals of the writing project and close work with the author to develop the writing to suit your purpose, function and audience. This is a review from a broad perspective of the structure of the manuscript. The editor works closely with the author to suggest improvements in organization, structure, and consistency, to maintain a single authorial voice.  Attention is focused on developing clarity in content, language, style, and presentation suitable for the manuscript’s intended purpose and readership.

COPY EDITING

Focus: Grammar and Spelling Mistakes

Each line of the text is reviewed to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, awkward sentences, and verbiage. Copy editing includes exchanging passive verbs for active, adding transitions between and within paragraphs, and highlighting style issues and inconsistencies in capitalization, hyphenation, number formats and ensuring adherence to style guidelines.

PROOFREADING

Focus: Typographical Errors

Once your manuscript is returned to you from the editor and you have made all the corrections, your proof is designed and ready for the proofreader. In this process, the edited copy is matched to your proof to catch any missing pages, omissions, and stray typographical and mechanical errors. This is the final stage before publication.
